VACL – Vlan Access Control List

Packets that stay in same vlan do not cross a VLAN or interface boundary and do not necessarily have a direction in relation to an interface. These packets also might be non-IP, non-IPX, or completely bridged; therefore, they never pass through the multilayer switching mechanism. VACL are filters that directly can affect how packets are handled within a VLAN.

VACL are merged into the TCAM and are configured in a route map fashion, with a series of matching conditions and actions to take.

HOW TO CREATE A VACL

1. Create an access-list to stop host(s) going to other host(s).
Switch(config)# ip access-list extended local-17
Switch(config-acl)#permit ip host 192.168.99.17 192.168.99.0 0.0.0.255
Switch(config-acl)#exit
2. Now create Vlan Access Map
Switch(config)# vlan access-map block-17 10
Switch(config-access-map)# match ip address local-17
Switch(config-access-map)# action drop
Switch(config-access-map)#vlan access-map block-17 20
Switch(config-access-map)#action forward
Switch(config-access-map)#exit
3. Now apply Vlan Access Map to Vlan
Switch(config)# Vlan filter block-17 vlan-list 99

BPDU Guard Explanation

Access ports run STP too. BPDU’s can still be received on an access port even after using portfast. Portfast basically allows the port to go to forwarding state without going through STP normal convergence criteria and also if it goes up/down TCP BPDU’s are not sent.

The problem here is that if a switch by mistake is connected to an access port that switch will start STP to reconverge again or that switch may even become ROOT. To fix this problem we can enable BPDU guard on the access port. By defualt if a switch port is in PORTFAST then BPDU guard is automatically enabled on it.

This enable/disable use this command:

switch(config)# spanning-tree portfast bpduguard default

on Interface basis use this command

switch(config-if)# no spanning-tree bpduguard enable

If a BPDU is sensed on a BPDU guard enabled port the port is shutdown in an error condition and must be either manually re-enabled or automatically recovered through the errdisable timeout function.
